On the lush coast of Coral Manor, Florida, CE 2003 Villa interprets the philosophy of symbiosis between modern architecture and tropical nature with its "horizontally stretched geometric body". Designed by STATE of Architecture, this residence constructs a secret habitat with flowing light and shadow among the blue sea and green trees through layered volumes, transparent interfaces and local materials.
The villa is designed with the theme of "horizon". Through the staggered superposition of multiple blocks, a rhythmic horizontal architectural outline is formed. The ground floor adopts an overhead design, and concrete pillars support the upper living space, which not only avoids the moisture problem in tropical areas, but also forms a transparent gray space on the ground floor - the sea breeze can pass freely, bringing the shadows of the palm trees and the sound of the waves in the courtyard into the room. The terraces on the second and third floors are stepped, and the deep cantilevered eaves on each floor form a natural sunshade system, which can not only block the direct sunlight, but also create a mottled light and shadow theater for the lower space.
The building facade adopts the strategy of "virtual-real contrast": the side facing the garden and the sea is dominated by a full glass curtain wall, and the frameless design eliminates the boundary between indoor and outdoor to the maximum extent; the facade facing away from the road is built with local stone to form a solid wall, with strip shutters to ensure privacy while guiding the cross-ventilation. This "dialectic of openness and closure" makes the building like a naturally grown rock, both solid and transparent.
The design team constructed the material system based on “a dialogue between light and heavy textures”: the bottom of the exterior wall is built with coral stone into a rough base. Its porous structure echoes the coastal environment. Over the years, moss and vines will naturally grow on it, becoming a scale of time. The upper walls are covered with off-white stucco. The soft tones avoid visual fatigue under strong tropical light, and the hand-scraped texture deliberately retained on the surface injects warmth into the building.
Wood and stone are the main materials in the interior: the living room floor is paved with light-colored travertine tiles, whose natural texture is like a beach washed by waves; the stair handrails are made of local pine wood, and the undyed wood color forms a color dialogue with the outdoor palm leaves; the kitchen island is made of Brazilian quartzite, and the golden veins jumping in the dark texture are just like the light spots of sunlight penetrating the tree canopy. It is worth mentioning that all wood has been treated with anti-corrosion, and the metal components are made of salt spray-resistant stainless steel to ensure durability in the humid and hot sea breeze environment.
The living room, dining room and kitchen on the first floor form a "super space" without partitions. When the three folding glass doors are fully opened, the boundary between indoor and outdoor completely disappears. The rattan chandelier hanging in the dining area echoes the material of the outdoor hammock. The dining table is a retractable teak long table that can be freely adjusted according to the size of the family gathering. The kitchen island is not only a cooking workbench, but also the core of family communication - the embedded induction cooker avoids the heat of traditional open flames, and the curved backrest of the bar seat fits the human body curve, matched with coral branches picked up by the sea, integrating the holiday atmosphere into daily life.
The master bedroom suite on the second floor can be called a "floating observation deck": the entire floor-to-ceiling window faces the Atlantic Ocean, and you can wake up to the sound of the waves every morning; the background wall at the head of the bed is decorated with hand-woven palm leaf mats, exuding a natural fragrance; the bathroom adopts a double basin design, and the independent bathtub is embedded under the bay window, so you can look directly at the coconut grove in the distance while taking a bath. The terrace outside the second bedroom is equipped with an outdoor shower device, where you can enjoy the unique experience of "bathing together with nature" when tropical rainstorms suddenly fall.
The terraces and courtyards surrounding the building form a "semi-outdoor living room": the L-shaped lounge chair area by the swimming pool is shaded by thatched umbrellas, and the ground is paved with volcanic rock gravel, so you can feel the natural touch when walking barefoot; the sunken fire pit in the north courtyard is made of coral stone. When the bonfire is lit at night, the firelight and the sparkling waves on the sea surface complement each other. These gray spaces blur the boundaries between interior, architecture and nature, allowing residents to embrace the tropical climate in the most comfortable manner at any time.
The essence of CE 2003 Villa is a redefinition of "tropical living". It rejects flashy decorations and responds to the call of sunlight, sea breeze and vegetation with the form, material and space of the building itself; it breaks the physical barriers between indoors and outdoors, making living a continuous experience of dancing with nature. Here, architecture is not a container to conquer nature, but a humble frame - framing the golden sea at sunrise, framing the rolling dark clouds before the rainstorm, and framing the eternal yearning of mankind for a tropical paradise.
